The wAY I WORK...

My approach to working with children and young people is guided by six core beliefs, heavily influenced by my time at Element, a youth arts charity, and the endless conversations we had on the why behind art and creativity, reflexivity and intersectionality. Big love to Halima, Jordann, Innes and Cristina

This is by no means an exhaustive list and I’m not perfect. Beliefs are ever-evolving, so come find me in a year and these may look a bit different. At its core though, my practice strives to consider that…

  • Everyone is Creative.

Creativity isn't reserved for any one group. Everyone can be an artist, and creativity comes in many forms. I'm interested in questioning who and what is seen as ‘creative’.

  • Relationships Matter.

Building equal, supportive, and joyful relationships is the foundation of meaningful youth work. Without them, the work can only go so far.

  • No One-Size-Fits-All.

Children and young people live diverse and complex lives. I aim for my projects to reflect this diversity and adapt based on the needs of the people I’m working with.

  • Young People-Centered.

The voices and experiences of young people should lead the way to ensure that projects feel relevant, authentic, and reflective of their worlds.

  • Process Over Product.

The journey of creativity, expression of identity, thoughts and feelings matters more than the final result. Projects should be about discovery and exploration, not creating a perfect piece of art.

  • Look Inwards.

Looking inwards (or lack of) shapes how we move through the world. I try to understand who I am - my life experiences, beliefs and assumptions and how these can impact the people and places I cross paths with.
